The work
Distributed Virtual Environments (DVEs) allow many participants to interact in computer-generated spaces over a network. This thesis investigates how concepts from relativity theory can improve the experience when network latency introduces inconsistency. It presents a “world picture” method that incorporates delayed views of distant objects, relativistic dynamics to constrain object speeds, and object distortion to support concurrent interaction. A prototype system, Orbis, demonstrated the techniques, while a user trial suggested that they increased performance and reduced undesirable latency effects.
