Creative Woodturner

The challenge

Help woodturners and potters explore the shape, finish and scale of a design before committing material in the workshop.

The work

Creative Woodturner began as specialist software for planning turned forms and became a pair of mobile apps for woodturning and pottery, built from one React Native codebase with over-the-air updates. The app lets makers draw a profile, see the 3D form update immediately, apply realistic wood or glaze finishes, save projects locally, and place designs into real spaces with AR before committing material in the workshop.

My contribution

Founded and developed the product from concept to commercial release, combining profile editing, live 3D rendering, material previews, AR placement and PDF export.

Delivery detail

• Draw and refine vessel profiles with line, bezier and catenary segments, editable handles, dimensions, and undo or redo support.
• Preview the result instantly in a live 3D viewer with docked, floating and fullscreen modes for inspecting proportions from multiple angles.
• Browse wood and glaze libraries, compare grain orientation, and save named designs with categories and gallery thumbnails.
• Place the design on real surfaces with AR and generate a printable PDF view for workshop reference.

The outcome

A commercial design product developed into two mobile apps from one React Native codebase, bringing specialist workshop planning to phones and tablets.
